GEEVESTON
A quiet little place by the edge of the forest, which we like to visit because it’s there.

50 minute drive south-west from Hobart
Another place where it’s always worth stopping for a wander. Bits of ‘Rosehaven’ are reputed to be shot here. Masaaki’s Sushi House is located here, if only infrequently open. An avid surfer, Masaaki San is known to follow the surf wherever it’s happening, on this island or any other. We’ve tried getting in for some of his renowned cuisine every time we’ve been to Geeveston, but the best we’ve done was finding his stall at the Winter Feast at Dark Mofo. Not a bad consolation prize; and there’s always next time.
The Forest and Heritage Centre is worth dropping into for a bit of local history; and the town itself is a very pleasant place to walk around, unwind from the drive and soak up some fresh air.
Just to the north of Geeveston, you’ll pass Port Huon, where the fishing boats land their catches. The modern fish packaging plant is a useful landmark, but the real deal for mine is to go down to the docks and check out the boats and the life of a working dock; something I once took for granted around the Sydney foreshore, but which no longer exists there. We’ve seen some boats from as far north as Stanley alongside those docks, then tried and failed to imagine what fish the crew had caught and what seas they’d had to face to catch them?
The last time we were down here the weather was calm and still but heavily overcast, with light, misty drizzle; gloomily atmospheric, barely a zephyr, the river smooth as black glass, in perfect counterpoint to images of storm swells and howling winds. And very photogenic.
